About

Background

According to International Data Corporation, the global artificial intelligence (AI) market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17% to reach 250 billion euros in 2027.

Examining the US, Acemoglu and Autor (2011) came to the same conclusions than Darvas and Wolff (2016) who worked on the French, German, Italian, Swedish and British cases : in these countries, the number of middle-education jobs (clerks, machine operators, assemblers) is declining while the number of either high-education jobs such as managers, engineers and health professionals, or on the contrary of low-education service occupations (e.g. shop workers, deliverers, etc.) that are not worth to replace by automation, are growing.

Because it creates a wide range of new products and services, AI is the very type of technology favouring not only entrepreneurship but also new generations of graduates, professionals, and entrepreneurs.

But AI also changes radically the way businesses are run. K. Patel listed five ways AI can added value: efficiency, productivity, customer experience, creativity and error avoidance.

At the same time, AI is viewed as a threat rather than an opportunity, including youth who is presumably more acquainted with digital skills than their elders. In a study made by Young Enterprise on young people’s view of AI, 76% of respondents said that they think that AI will lead to fewer jobs.

Objectives

PEPAICO has as its goal to provide, students, professionals and entrepreneurs with the necessary and sufficient knowledge and tools to allow them to take on the challenges posed by the emergence of AI and exploit the wide range of opportunities offered by this technology, either as novel products or innovative means to upgrade processes. By contributing to the emergence of graduates, professionals, entrepreneurs well aware of the opportunities and threats AI is and will be bringing in, the project is expected to: i) lead to business creations and jobs; ii) upgrade the employability of the learners since artificial intelligence is adopted by an increasingly number of companies.

The project pursues four main objectives resulting in four project results (PRs) in one being made up of a number of deliverables (see the page dedicated to the project results).

  • The aim of R1 is to lay the foundations for the educational methodology and content development that will be adopted by the PEPAICO project. It began with an analysis of current and future artificial intelligence technologies, products and services. In parallel, the project conducted a study based on a quantitative survey and qualitative semi-structured interviews to characterise established and potential entrepreneurs in terms of their understanding and use of artificial intelligence.

  • The aim of PR2 is to specify the blended modular training programme on artificial intelligence in terms of content and format. To achieve this, the project has :
    - Identified the needs and expectations of jobseekers, employees and entrepreneurs with regard to artificial intelligence training.
    - Used the results in combination with the PR1 results to determine the artificial intelligence to be acquired by each target group according to their background, professional profile and personality.
    - Specified the formats to be used for the teaching material, e.g. theoretical classroom teaching, simulations, coaching, gamification, peer assessment, self-assessment, etc.

  • The overall aim of PR3 is to develop the content of the basic training based on the survey, the needs analysis and the expected learning content specified by PR2. The content developed will be deployed through face-to-face teaching and training.
    To this end, PR3 has:
    - Inventoried the partners' teaching material meeting the specifications of PR2 ;
    - Adapted existing teaching materials to meet the needs of trainees;
    - Developed additional teaching material to fully meet the expectations of jobseekers, employees and entrepreneurs.
    - Carried out pilot sessions and refined the content, taking into account the feedback received.

  • The aim of PR4 is to develop and test :
    - A distance learning programme with the dual aim of: i) complementing face-to-face courses; ii) widely disseminating the results of the project by making it accessible to an audience well beyond the project consortium, including but not limited to the European Union.
    - A microlearning application designed to provide: i) easy learning: through a two-minute training session every day, anytime and anywhere; ii) access to additional content according to their questions and needs thanks to the interconnection between members of the community; ii) a self-assessment to analyse one's understanding of artificial intelligence in relation to the use one wishes to make of artificial intelligence.
    PR4 pays particular attention to the complementarity and coherence between the microlearning and self-assessment application and the distance learning platform. To this end, PR4 has developed a learning platform on which the training material developed in OI2 will be deployed. This learning platform is based on an open source learning management system (LMS), Moodle. After an initial analysis of user needs, technical requirements, functional requirements and learning requirements, the learning management system selected was customised and adapted to the needs of learners and teachers. The chosen solution is cost-effective, user-friendly and independent of the user's device and browser. The platform is popular and will be widely used to ensure its continued existence for many years after the project. The project's learning platform will remain available for up to five years after the project's completion under the conditions defined in the project's sustainability plan.
